The Swiss municipality of Samnaun (1,846m) is located in the Lower Engadine (Canton Graubünden) and borders the Austrian region of Tyrol. The municipality consists of the districts of Compatsch, Laret, Plan, Ravaisch and Samnaun. Altogether, Samnaun has only about 800 inhabitants. Thanks to numerous hotels, the duty-free status and the Silvretta Skiarena Samnaun/Ischgl, the small town has developed into a real tourist stronghold.

Samnaun’s duty-free status is closely linked to its history. Until 1912, Samnaun could only be reached via Austria. With the introduction of the customs system, Samnaun would have economically struggled. The Swiss Federal Council therefore decided to grant Samnaun duty-free status. The small mountain village was thus able to continue trading with neighboring Tyrol without having to declare all products.

The ski area offers not only black and red pistes but also many blue pistes, which are ideal for beginners. At an altitude of 1,800m above sea level, the ski area guarantees snow from the end of November to the beginning of May.
